The Wonder of the Snowmass Balloon Festival: A Family Tradition
The Snowmass Balloon Festival is one of those special events that truly brings the magic of the mountains to life. Each September, the skies over Snowmass Village are filled with the vibrant colors of dozens of hot air balloons, creating an eye catching scene that’s as breathtaking as it is unforgettable. For many, including my own family, this festival is more than just a weekend event—it’s a special tradition.
I remember the first time I took my kids to the Snowmass Balloon Festival. They were young, and very excited. We were joined by their grandmother, making it an even more special occasion. Early in the morning, before the sun had fully risen, we bundled up and made our way to Snowmass.
As we arrived, the sight of the balloons being inflated was mesmerizing. My kids’ eyes were wide with amazement as the massive balloons came to life, each one a burst of color against the early morning sky. Their grandmother, who had been to many balloon festivals in her life, was just as captivated as they were. We all stood there watching as the first balloons began to lift off, floating gracefully into the sky.
I am not sure if they still allow this or not (they did in 2009!) but my boys and their buddy were allowed to hang out in one of the baskets before take off. Even though they never left the ground you could see the imagination of doing so on their faces. You do not need to leave the ground however to appreciate this event. There’s something truly magical about being surrounded by the majestic mountains of Snowmass, watching these giant balloons drift lazily through the sky.
So, if you’re looking for a fun, family-friendly event this fall, I can’t recommend the Snowmass Balloon Festival enough. Pack a picnic breakfast and a Yeti full of coffee, grab the kiddos, grandma, the dog, and prepare to be amazed by the beauty of the balloons and the joy of spending time together in one of Colorado’s most picturesque settings. It’s a tradition you’ll want to return to year after year—just like we have.
